Lightweight
Wheelchair
This wheelchair is lighter
than the average standard wheelchair.
It is used by patients who cannot
propel the standard weight wheelchair
using arms or legs.
Medicare
- Capped rental. Coverage requires
the following criteria:
- Patient needs a wheelchair
for mobility in the home.
- The lightweight feature
is covered when the patient
meets the following criteria:
- Patient is unable to
self-propel in a standard
weight wheelchair.
- Patient is capable of
self-propulsion of a lightweight
wheelchair.
- If the patient needs adjustable
height arms, the following
criteria must be met:
- Patient must be in the
wheelchair at least two
hours per day.
- Patient must have a
need for an arm height
different from fixed height
arms.
High
Strength Lightweight Wheelchair
Construction of this
wheelchair reduces overall weight
of chair. This ultra-light feature
is for patients with severe upper
body weakness who cannot propel a
standard wheelchair.
Medicare
- Capped rental. Coverage requires
the following criteria:
- Patient needs a wheelchair
for mobility in the home.
- The high strength lightweight
feature is covered when the
patient meets all the following
criteria:
- Patient is unable to
self propel in a standard
wheelchair.
- Patient self-propels
the wheelchair while engaging
in frequent activities
that cannot be performed
in a standard or lightweight
wheelchair, and/or
- Patient requires a seat
width, depth, or height
that cannot be accommodated
in a standard, lightweight
or hemi-wheelchair and
spends at least 2 hours
per day in the wheelchair.
- Medicare also requires that
the patient needs this wheelchair
due to a seat width, height,
or depth that cannot be accommodated
in a standard, lightweight,
or hemi-wheelchair.
