Tips for Charging

batteryMost manufacturers recommend that batteries be charged overnight. However, since there is no "average" wheelchair user, one individual's batteries may be totally discharged in one day while another's may last several days. Charge time and frequency must be adjusted to individual patterns of use. Recharge often enough to prevent total discharge but not so often as to overcharge.

Charging at night when the chair is not in use is obviously a necessity. It is wise to locate the chair in a well ventilated area while charging, since the charging process causes the battery to emit moderate quantities of hydrogen gas. High concentrations of hydrogen may be explosive. Charging should also take place away from the immediate vicinity of the sleeping area of the user or others. The acid odor or fumes generated by charging may be irritating to the respiratory system and the eyes.
