While
keeping a battery fully charged
in frigid weather is very important,
a battery should not be allowed
to become completely discharged
even in warmer weather. Recharging
often enough to prevent complete
discharge will significantly increase
battery life.
When a battery is charged, the electrical
energy changes the electrolyte chemically.
The measure of the charge -- is
the specific gravity (sp.gr.) of
the electrolyte. Specific gravity
is a measure of how dense the fluid
is compared to pure water.
Most current models of power wheelchairs
have some type of visual charge
level indicator. The accuracy and
reliability of these indicators,
however, are frequently somewhat
less than ideal. For this reason,
and for other diagnostic purposes,
regular use of a Hydrometer to check
battery condition is recommended.
